Christchurch boasts the only tram restaurant in New Zealand and while that alone guarantees you a unique experience, there is also so much more waiting for you. Admittedly this blog is written with a degree of prejudice because we’ve dined on the Tram Restaurant 3 times now and are already planning our 4th experience. Just putting it out there!
Simply put, it’s a 3 hour fine dining dinner date that moves around the highlights of central Christchurch in a colonial style tram car. Sounds posh but in true Kiwi style there is no dress code, wear what you will, but that said most wear smart casual.
Not only do diners enjoy a great scenic tour, they also become a part of the Christchurch cityscape that evening as they become the backdrop for pedestrians taking a special shot. Diners can also enjoy the interaction with those looking on no doubt in envy! We were a little shy the first time but now we enjoy waving to those looking our way with smiles on their faces. Restaurant Tram royalty you can be!
The journey starts from Cathedral Junction, close to Cathedral Square, and diners are welcomed on board one party at a time and introduced to the evening’s staff, the first course and welcome drink. This is followed by 3 courses which are evenly spaced out over the 3 hours. The menu is posted on the website in advance so there’s plenty of time to make your decision.
Over the 5 years we have been able to experience how the Restaurant Tram experience has developed into a truly world class dining experience and we can say with confidence that everyone must try this unique to Christchurch evening.
