The most important point about the lockdown is staying in your bubble – this is how it works at the motel.
In order to make the lockdown work at the Motel we have made some major changes.
The office has been closed,
Self room servicing was introduced,
A plastic barrier was added to the airport shuttle separating the driver and passenger area,
Communal areas have either been removed (the downstairs bench seats), closed (the garden furniture) or are cleaned between guests using them (laundry).
All guests were given full information of these changes the day the lockdown started and any changes or updates are emailed on a daily basis. In reality, just like the government, we are pretty much making this up as we go along, making improvements as we realise things can be done in a better way. Everyone has been accepting of the changes and the new systems mean that everyone can easily go about organising their living conditions at Airways Motel. Every morning we set up a service station in the central area of the motel. There is a cage for soiled linen and a stack of clean linen, also condiments (shampoos, conditioner etc. as well as tea, coffee and sugar) that guests can help themselves to while at the same time maintaining their social distancing. The recycling and rubbish wheelie bins are there too.
It’s working well and when it’s a sheet change day sheets are distributed , which means that guests can make their own bed!
As we said, we are making it up as we go along and we did come to one stark realisation though after a couple of days of lockdown. That is that while guests can dispose of their rubbish and get new linen, new shampoo, tea and coffee, they had nothing to clean their bathroom with! Shocking! Who would ever dream of cleaning one’s own toilet at a motel! But that is the new reality.
Now at the motel of course we have bathroom cleaning items. Nothing fancy, just the commercial basics to get the job done. The only problem is that we only have 2 sets of cleaning equipment. With 3 cleaners on the roster and only really 2 working at a time, we only have 2 sets of cleaning equipment. We cannot just have a cleaning set that goes around the rooms with everyone using it. Not when we are pretending that everyone has Covid-19. That would send the virus around this place like wildfire. Not good.
We decided we needed to buy residential cleaning gear for all guests to be able to keep their rooms and bathrooms clean. We made a shopping list and came up with 3 items, toilet cleaner, kitchen/bathroom spray and a sponge for the bathroom. We figured that if guests had these 3 items, they could clean to their hearts content. Or not, if they chose so.
The problem was getting these items in this Covid-19 lockdown situation – was not that easy…. To be continued….
